Before new insulation can perform at its best, old or damaged material often needs to come out first. Whether you're dealing with rodent contamination, water damage, mould, or simply outdated insulation that's lost its effectiveness, proper removal and remediation sets the foundation for a clean, efficient insulation upgrade.
Not every insulation project requires removal — but when it does, skipping this step leads to poor results. Common situations that call for removal include rodent infestation (droppings, urine, nesting material), water damage from roof leaks or condensation, visible mould growth, vermiculite insulation (potential asbestos), severely compressed or deteriorated material, and renovation projects requiring access to the building envelope. If you're unsure whether your existing insulation needs to come out, our free assessment will give you a clear answer.
We use industrial vacuum equipment to remove old insulation safely and efficiently. The material is extracted through a hose system directly to a collection bag outside your home, minimizing dust and contamination inside the living space. After removal, we sanitize affected surfaces and identify the source of any contamination — whether that's sealing rodent entry points, or treating mould. Only after the space is clean and dry do we proceed with re-insulation.
Most removal projects are paired with re-insulation — either blown-in attic insulation, spray foam, or batt and vapour barrier, depending on the application. We'll recommend the best insulation type for your situation and can often complete removal and re-insulation in the same visit. Combined projects may also qualify for CleanBC and FortisBC rebates.
